Why Give
There are literally thousand of registered charities in Canada, many of which are devoted to helping children who are in need. Today’s donors are faced with a confusing array of worthwhile organizations from which to choose – so why make the children served by Peel Children’s Aid a priority?
Child abuse and neglect are hidden crimes that exist in every neighbourhood, in every income bracket, and in every culture. While it is easy to ignore because it’s so difficult to see, child abuse affects children in our own community, possibly even in our own circle of friends.
Although poverty may be easier to spot in other areas of the GTA, or in other countries, over 37,000 children in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon live in poverty and may go to bed hungry, show up at school without clothing appropriate for the weather, and enjoy none of the regular joys of childhood like joining a team or receiving a birthday gift, because there is no money to spare. According to the 2006 Census, there were 166,960 people in low income in Peel (before tax Low Income Cut-off) in 2005, representing 14.5% of the total population.
Many of the abused and neglected children in our community, and those who live in poverty, will grow up in Peel Region and continue to live close by as adults. Their lives will intertwine with ours in a million ways. Your support of these children and youth now, while they are still young, can have an immediate impact on the role they will play in our community in the future.
Children have the potential to do, and be, anything they can imagine. With your help, they can become the family doctor who cares your children’s children; the mechanic who fixes your car; the scientist whose research contributes to a cure for cancer; or the next Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs!
If, however, they are left to grow up without proper role models, without support and encouragement, without guidance and the opportunity to learn and grow, they will be more likely to drop out of school; to end up on some form of government assistance; to be homeless; and possibly to affect our community, even our families, in a negative way.
Your support CAN make a difference, not just to the children and youth served by Peel Children’s Aid, but to your own family, and your own community. It can be so easy, and feel so good, to bring joy, hope and possibility into a child’s life. Please join us in helping our children!
